24th of July Parade...yes its late, I know

Between the pageant itself and my brother Josh coming home, this is a bit late!! My mom took these pictures so trying to find the time to get over to her house to copy it to my card let alone post it....well lets be honest, it wasn't high up on my priority list...BUT I couldn't not post it because of how cute you girls looked and how well it turned out. Aside from some grease getting on DeLaney's arm, Alyssa getting the flu and having to leave, and one of the 4-wheelers not starting hence a little bit of caos in the morning....all is well that ends well!

Miss Iron County 2009

Angela and I worked so hard to make this year incredible and it was such an amazing feeling watching it all pan out. The production itself turned out so well and the tickets we sold were the most in years....we're finally seeing Miss Iron County go back to the way it was and better. Angela and I had to go out and help sell tickets because the line out the door wasn't getting any smaller and we needed to get started. We finally started 15 minutes late hoping the two girls left could handle the crowd. I sincerely thought I was going to have a heart attack watching the lights go dim knowing that it time to start.

This is Erika's last moments...she looks thrilled

DeLaney's song was phenomenal, she looked beautiful and did an amazing job.

This was the front page news the next morning. I was so proud
CEDAR CITY - The annual Miss Iron County Pageant continues to break down stereotypes, both of pageant life and for the Utah community, as queens of past and present push platforms of change at home. This year's Miss Iron County, crowned Saturday night in front of a packed Canyon View auditorium, is 18-year-old Delaney Westfall, with her platform of adoption advocacy. The Cedar City resident has four adopted siblings of diverse backgrounds, not something one sees in the average family today. But having a fulfilling life with joy from her siblings made choosing a platform, and how to move forward, relatively easy for the Brigham Young University freshman.

"I'll be putting together a book full of adoption stories," Westfall said, hoping to get the published information out to educate the public. Westfall said she is also planning a large community event for Adoption Day, Nov. 15, in hopes of meeting her goal to get as many children adopted into loving homes as possible. Last year's Miss Iron County, Erika Hansen, also from Cedar City, came closer to her own goal after being crowned, to diligently spread awareness about child sexual abuse, being a survivor and silent sufferer for years before speaking out. Hansen has become a certified Steward of Children because of her active role in the community on this subject, being able to teach a three-step program for both children and adults to help them recognize sign of sexual abuse and how to react. "Get ready for the experience of your life," Hansen said before the crowning to the future Miss Iron County. Westfall received several awards for winning, including a $3,000 scholarship to the school of her choice. Her first attendant is Aimee Peterson and second attendant is Crystal Cardon, who also received scholarships

Congratulations Delaney Westfall. You are beautiful and are a great role model for young women everywhere! Your adoption advocacy platform will be well served by you. I also know you were chosen as the first runner-up in the Colgate Country Showdown. Having been there, I can attest to your wonderful singing talent. Stay true to yourself and to all of your goals...

Angela and I have gotten so much posative feedback this year, more so than any other year that I've directed. The production was amazing and the calibur of girls we had this year was incredibly impressive. Every year I struggle with only being able to keep one girl. This year was harder than any other year. I hope you girls see and recognize how amazing you did. Just because you didn't actually walk away with the crown doesn't mean you didn't do an incredible job and I watched some of you grow so so much and I'm so proud of you. I better see each and every one of you there next year. Thanks girls!

Good Job Girls...

Girls...I'm so proud of you. It was an amazing pageant and I hope you all enjoyed the experience. I want to post about that night, but I only have a few pictures from that night backstage. Will you all email me any pictures you or your family took from that night? I would appreciate it. Thanks girls!

Some Secrets Hurt

Linda Garner is the author of "Some Secrets Hurt". It is a children's book that tells a story about a young girl named Maggie who becomes a victim of sexual abuse. It's a great book and has a Parent's Guide in the back. I encourage everyone to head over to Deseret Book and purchase a copy. Every home needs this book!

A few FYI's

-If you are attending the mock interview tonight (Hampton Inn, 6 pm) you may want to bring a copy of your fact sheet and platform resume so that it'll be realistic. Angela is going to try and bring a copy, but in case she isn't able to...bring a copy

-We will NOT be providing a professional video to buy, if you want a copy of this years pageant make sure you have your family record it.

Miss Iron County, 2009

Canyon View High School, August 15, 2009 at 7 pm

Featuring the incredibly talented...

"Welcome to the smooth sounds and rockin' riffs of !nverted. We promise to make your stay enjoyable, your attention kept, and your feet tappin'. Don't be surprised if you don't see any instruments of stage because we ate them. So sit back relax and enjoy."
...Cole Sherratt, Kurt Walker, Lance Adams, Phil Trunnell, and Reagan Nickels

Master of Ceremony:
Cole Sherratt

...and of course our very own Miss Iron County 2008, Erika Hansen

Tickets...

Girls if your family is interested in discounted tickets to the pageant, have your moms bring money on behalf of all who wants one to the breakfast the morning of and Angela and I will have tickets they can purchase for $5 a piece.

Question: Are we (you contestants) still responsible for selling them?
Answer: I don't know who this is because theres no name, but no...it wouldn't hurt to sell as many as possible considering all the proceeds from the pageant night are going right back into scholarships, we aren't "making" you sell a certain amount. If your family wants to purchase them at the discounted price then they would need to that morning.

Are you getting sick with my obsession with Emily Clarke's Winkfotos? I'm working on my 12 step program, I really am. But how can you not just stare at these photos ALL DAY LONG! They are inspiring and I hope she NEVER ever goes away. Thank you Emily. Thank you again and again for all these you did. They are so incredibly beautiful!

Mock interview has changed...

So sorry! We had to change the date of the mock interview to MONDAY, AUGUST 10 AT 6PM. It will still be at the Hampton Inn, but different day. I'm sorry about being family night and all, but this is the only time our judges can make it. I would strongly suggest taking advantage of this opportunity. It will help you so much more than I can possibly explain. If you are planning on attending you need to click on the comment box below this post and leave your name. Angela will contact you with your specific time. (If there's a lot of you that are interested we will schedule you to come 10-15 minutes before and after eachother so you're not standing around waiting all night. If theres only 1 or 2 of you it won't as big of a deal but she'll contact you etiher way) Thanks girls!

A couple FYI's

In the past, I have allowed the girls who don't make the royalty to take their 8x10's that will be displayed in the foyer. You are still allowed to do that IF you are willing to take the picture OUT of the frame. Angela and I decided we don't want to buy new frames every year, so we are planning on reusing them. So you can take the picture after the pageant IF YOU ARE NOT IN THE ROYALTY, but NOT the frame.

Pageant week schedule:
-Wednesday, August 12th at 6 pm-Production number blocking and modeling, bring your production number dresses and ALL ACCESSORIES you are planning to wear so that Angela and I can evaluate it as a whole. We may take away, add, or do nothing depending on what everyone else is wearing and how it looks as a whole. If you are uncomfortable witht he sleeveless dress, you are welcome to put a BLACK shade shirt underneath, everyone is to wear the cami that I gave you with your dress. If you have not recieved your dress, I would STRONGLY recommend calling before next week so that if the dress needs fixing, you are not realizing that the week of.
-Thursday, August 13th at 6 pm- Production number and talent run through
-Friday, August 14th at 6pm- FULL DRESS RUN THOUGH. You don't have to wear full hair and makeup, but you do need your clothes so that you have an idea of how much or how little time you will have to change. Plan on being there late, we may run it twice.
-Saturday, August 15th- PAGEANT DAY!! HOORAY!
*Breakfast- 9 am at Hampton Inn
*Interviews begin at 1:00 p.m.
*Curtain Call 6:00 p.m.
*Pageant Begins 7:00 p.m. PROMPT!

You HAVE to have your CMN $ and form that is on the blog WITH you on that wednesday. You CANNOT run without that

If you have any other questions let us know, otherwise we will see you later!

FUN Run!

Scholarships

If any of you are planning to use scholarships for this coming fall you need to specify where you will plan to use it so that I can get that to the county and increase your chances of being able to. Since the pageant lies so close to when school starts, the county has to start processing that voucher. If they know ahead of time who wants it where, if that person gets any scholarship money its faster and all that. Thanks girls. Just leave a comment below, you can click on "anonymous" and just type your name at the bottom.

Mock Interview for those interested

There have been a few requests for a mock interview, so we are setting one up Saturday, 6 pm at the Hampton Inn. You are welcome to wear anything you like, but if you want honest feedback on your actual intervew suit, makeup, hair, etc...I'd come as close to how you're planning to come for the pageant. If you have any questions, please let me or Angela know. Thanks girls.

Reminders...

I will be leaving out of town Monday, July 27th at 1 pm. If you would like to come and get your dress BEFORE the fun run on Saturday, you need to call me before I leave. I would recommend this in case it needs adjusting.

DON'T forget the fun run on saturday morning, 8:30 am. This is not negotiable. You cannot participate in the pageant if you have not raised $100. If you are not there, I will assume that you are bringing me $100 to the 1st pageant week rehearsal (thursday, August 13th) that your mom, dad, or Aunty Em "donated". And just to remind you that whoever raises the most money gets $100 straight cash. Your money is DUE on that thursday. No exceptions.

The production number HAS to be LEARNED, MEMORIZED, and READY TO PERFORM on thursday. This year has the potential of being amazing production wise and you will stand out in a not good way if you are not memorized. Does that mean you need to be the best dancer, no. But there is a big difference between not being a good dancer and OBVIOUSLY not knowing the routine.

Please make sure if you are needing anything...ANYTHING that you let Angela or I know. We are here to help. We are here to run modeling, the production number, interviews, your talents, make up ideas, hair ideas, whatever it is you are stressing about, let us know and help you. BUT you need to make sure we are aware of it BEFORE the week of the pageant so that we are able to help adequately.

I want you girls to know that I am so proud of you. I can't speak for Angela, but I can tell you for myself that you girls light up my life and give me an outlet that allows me to enjoy my own. I appreciate your willingness to step outside your box and comfort zone so that others can watch you shine. I wish you all could see what I see in you and I hope that this is a good enough experience so that whatever the outcome you come back next year and play with me again! I was a little unsure of doing this a few years ago. Not sure if I was in a position to do something like this, but I am so thankful I did....I'm so thankful I have the blessing of getting to know girls like you every year and enjoy every minute of it! Thanks to Erika and Angela who make it easy to enjoy it! I love all of you!

GOOD JOB IN THE PARADE!

I'm sure you're thinking, "how hard is it to wave and look pretty, right?" But I was glad all of you were on time and thank you to Aimee, Jacey, and Bri for helping me in the morning...much appreciated. If your family took any cute pictures, send them to me and I'll post them here.

I HAVE YOUR DRESSES FOR THE PRODUCTION NUMBER AT MY HOUSE....call me, and let me know when you want to come get them. I am leaving out of town on monday and will be till friday night. I would highly recommend calling me BEFORE I leave so that if alterations are necessary we will know way ahead of time. So call.

Thanks again girls, much appreciated. Don't forget the FUN RUN on Saturday at 8:30 am...You have to be there and have your sponsors done. Please make sure you have it taken care of. We will see you saturday!

I'm excited to announce girls that Emily Clarke who created Winkfotos has let us know that she will be the official sponsor for Miss Iron County...meaning whoever wins she will be donating your session and the picture that will be in the Miss Utah magazine and more than likely all over town. If you are not familiar with Emily, here are some examples of her work...obviously most of them are of my family since I only have those on my computer. But they are so good

PS...

You can ask questions in the comment box, I check it every day. That way you don't have to email me and maybe someo fthe other girls have the same question.

Parade--Line up at 9:30 am

I will have your shirts anytime after 12 noon tomarrow...if you want to wear some sort of cami or tank top under your shirt you can change at the parade if you don't get a chance to get it from me before hand.

-Line up is 400 East and Main, theres a church right there that will give you the information of where you're lining up. Or you can call my cell and I can give you the exact spot of where we're lining up.

-9:30 PROMPT. They always tell you to be there at like an hour before, I won't make you do that, I won't be there that early because you COOK in the sun...BUT the only way we can get away with showing up late is if everyone is on time...so please be there right at 9:30.

-My father in law is running for mayor and has asked all of his kids and grandkids to be in there parade with him...that means you girls will be on your own. Please listen to Erika if she asks you to do something or be somewhere. I will meet you at the end of the parade. I'll be there to line up, but then I'll need to go with my husband and kids.

-if you have any questions you are welcome to call me, again you are welcome to come get your shirts, otherwise I'll see you on Friday at 9:30 am

FYI about Bronzing for you girls...

HOW TO USE BRONZER
BY LAURA HIGBEE

· If you have a light complexion, use sheer bronzers with pinkish or peach shimmer. Avoid bronzers that are too brown, as they can make your skin seem muddy or dirty.
· If you have a medium skin tone, you are very lucky and can probably use any bronzer. The best shades for you, however, would be gold or brown with a tiny bit of orange.
· As for dark-skinned ladies, brownish-red bronzers look the most flattering on you.
Apply bronzer where the sun naturally hits, such as the tops of your arms, shoulders, chest, and on the face- temples of the forehead, bridge of the nose, chin and cheekbones.
Cleavage- Sweep a line of bronzer between breasts to create a shadow (the shadow that naturally occurs when you have cleavage). Be sure to blend bronzer.

Abs- Take some bronzer and go along your natural oblique curves on the sides, not too dark though, just like shadowing on a picture, then follow the natural center ab cut with an even lighter bronzer stroke or shade, then lightly go across if you want the full pack but it will look less fake if you just do the sides.

Sculpt your leg muscles by putting bronzer right where the calf muscle starts.

TIPS

· A wide and fluffy powder brush will work best.
· Ideally you should never choose a bronzer that is more than 2 shades darker than your natural skin tone.
· Always make sure you blend the bronzer in well.
· If you have really dark skin, you can try creating cleavage by using a shimmery highlighter that is two shades lighter than your complexion.
· Don’t over do it.
· Bronzer should enhance your natural beauty, not dominate your complexion.

BRONZER VS BLUSH

Blush is reserved for the apples of the cheeks. To find the apples of your cheeks look in a mirror and smile. Use gentle, sweeping motions starting at the center of your apple, and move up and outwards towards the corner of your eye and up to the temple. Blush is ideal for brightening up pale/fair skin. Bronzer creates a sun kissed complexion and unlike blush, it isn’t restricted to just the cheeks.

CMN

This was in the email that the state sent me a coup[le of years ago when they started the whole CMN thing....

This really is a simple process. When a contestant registers, she can immediately send e-mails to all of her contacts explaining what she is doing for the Children's Miracle Network. If only 20 people give $5, she is done. It really is a very obtainable goal and we, as a State, are very excited about this partnership. Click on this site and follow the instructions from there. http://www.missamerica4kids.org/

Thanks Hailey for asking, I'm sending this to all the girls in case they are confused as well....

Here's the video girls...

-Please make sure that it is LEARNED before next workshop so that we can clean it up. If you are struggling or need help please let Angela or I know, I'm sure you could get together with one or more of the other girls. For those of you "non-dancers" (like me) it might make it LOTS easier to learn if you speak it while you do it. You'll feel like an idiot but it'll help you learn it better and faster.
-Please don't forget to email me your bios...thank you Kristin!!! Thank you for doing it right away.
