Erika Hansen's Platform: Child Sexual Abuse
I am one of the 39 million survivors of child sexual abuse that exist in America today. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys are victims before they turn 18. I know the solution to this terrible problem lies in education. Child sexual abuse has been a taboo topic for too long...and considering that child sex abuse is reported up to 80,000 times a year it's time we start talking about it. Darkness to Light is a national organization that focuses on confronting Child Sexual Abuse with courage. The website provides information on signs to look for, statistics, 7 steps to prevention, and a great training program to become a Steward of Children.
For parents: 3-Step Program
1. ALWAYS believe the child, they won't lie.
2. Contact the authorities immediately.
3. Praise the child and thank them for being brave and telling you.
For Children: 3-Step Program
1. Know if it was a good touch or bad touch. If your instincts tell you it was bad, listen to them because they don't lie.
2. Tell a trusted adult the first time.
3. Be confident and don't feel guilty because you did nothing wrong.
